WHAT IS COSMIC CONSEQUENCE?
Cosmic Consequence is a contemporary, illustrative divination deck. With a structure based on astrology and illustrations riddled with modern symbolism, this deck of cards was created to provide a new, relatable tool for the spiritual generation of today.

The direct outcome of the exploration and testing of the research question ‘How/can traditional tarot be updated with Astrology and modern day symbolism?’ - Cosmic Consequence challenges the outdated structure found in Traditional Tarot and exchanges it’s hierarchal system for a composition based on Astrology, allowing for more fluidity in the cards interpretations.
INSPIRATION
Waite and Smith managed to revolutionise Tarot by drawing from the modernity of their time, and to this day, The Rider Waite Smith Deck is still seen as the standard in Tarot communities. The modernity and inspiration they drew from was in 1909. Now, in 2021 - I do not think I am exaggerating when I say that a lot has changed. The objective of this project was to create a tool which people can use to predict, dissect, analyse and spiritually reflect on themselves and their daily circumstances. Astrology provides the structure and definitions of the cards; and the imagery represents these definitions by showcasing modern themes in order to be relatable in the 20th century.
WHAT IS IT MADE UP OF?
Cosmic Consequence is a 64 card divination deck.
With a foundation based on Astrology, the deck is sectioned into three groups: Zodiac Signs (12 cards), Astrological Houses (12 cards) and Planets (40 cards). The Planet cards are divided into four suits, which represent the astrological elements of Fire, Water, Air & Earth. Each elements/ suit has a card for each planet (ex. Mars in fire, Mars in air, Mars in water, Mars in earth. Jupiter in fire, Jupiter in water, Jupiter in air, Jupiter in
earth and so on..)

All cards have been digitally illustrated and printed in full colour for a vibrant and fresh finish.
WHY WE NEED IT
Under the umbrella of spirituality lies countless practices that aim to bring one closer to a peaceful or ‘connected’ state of being. New age spirituality has been steadily increasing in popularity (alongside mindfulness) throughout the years. It was during the recent pandemic, however, that a drastic boom in peoples interest on spiritual practices became more prevalent. With google searches for ‘manifestations’ and related terms having a 124% increase, as well as social media astrologers/spiritualists becoming influencers on apps such as TikTok.
This rise in New age practices is the main reason for creating a modernised, updated version of Tarot. Creating images that are expressive and youthful in nature can appeal to the younger audiences who would like to get started in spirituality, yet might not be thrilled about delving deep into the rich history and traditions of divination. As well as showcasing modern symbolism and current lifestyles, which aid in creating a relatable experience for the young spiritualists of today.
Not only is updating traditional Tarot beneficial for the modern audience, but in a larger context, it can serve as a symbol of progress in humanity. Whilst tradition and history inspire and keep past lived experiences ‘alive’; a tool which embraces the past - but is set in the present - can serve as an example of how as a collective we are constantly changing and evolving.
